Institute of Environmental Engineering

KTU Institute of Environmental Engineering is a centre for sustainable development of industry and business, which initiates and implements positive changes that affect people’s behaviour and technological progress. We cooperate with industry, business, government, and the public sector by encouraging changes in physical infrastructure and social capital, promoting sustainable environment that motivates sustainable lifestyle and reduces climate change.

 

Research areas

In order to maintain a balance between technological development, human well-being and the preservation and improvement of natural environment, one of the most important tasks of Lithuania, as well as other countries of the world, is to increase the environmental efficiency.
One of the most advanced methods for managing or reorganising industrial system, taking into account long-term needs, and on the basis of sustainable development, which includes ecological, social and economic harmony, is cleaner production (CP).
CP is a preventive integrated environmental management strategy, which reduces pollution from the very source of it, i.e. in the process itself. This can be done by eliminating the source of pollution generation by changing the technological process, its organisation, technological conditions and raw materials or product in order to reduce its negative impact on the environment throughout the life cycle of the product. The distinctive feature of CP is that it evaluates pollution and waste inseparably from the process in which they occur.

In order to create more efficient measures of environmental performance, in the course of the research, the solutions are sought taking into account the environmental impact throughout the life cycle of the product that is, using the lifecycle approach. The life-cycle approach requires an examination of the environmental impact of a product from its‘ physical appearance to extinction. The life cycle of product includes components such as raw material extraction, energy recovery, transportation, primary raw material preparation, product manufacturing, packaging, distribution, consumption, collection and final disposal. The requirement for this concept is that reducing the environmental impact at one stage of the life cycle would not increase the environmental impact of the next stage.

To familiarise Lithuanian companies and organisations with chemical management, REACH regulations and other issues related to chemical management, the Institute‘s staff are actively involved in the preparation of training and methodological resources and organise training courses. The Institute’s specialists also assist in identifying and resolving issues of companies and organisations related to the management of chemicals. Research is being carried out on the assessment of the risks posed by chemicals for environmental and human health.
The scientists and researchers of the Institute are also making the assessment of the environmental impact that may be caused by the planned economic activity. In such cases, not only the potential impact of chemicals that are planned to be used in economic activities or which enter the environment from the planned economic activity (atmosphere, water, soil, waste), but also the potential impact of economic activity on natural resources, on social and cultural environment, noise effects, etc. is being analysed.
The Institute’s scholars participate in preparation of recommendations for the implementation of legislation, analysing the consequences of their implementation, developing implementation plans. They also participate in the Consultation Commission, which makes proposals and recommendations for the registration of plant protection products.

The team of the Institute’s researchers, which work in this specific area, are focusing on activities for creating smart sustainable city employing a cross-sectorial, transdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach, which calls for the establishment of strategic collaborations. There are a number of stakeholders collaborating in this process – urban decision-makers, national and regional authorities, enterprises (large companies, small and medium-sized enterprises) in the ICT, energy, power and automation, transport and infrastructure, construction, and professional appliance sectors, universities, research institutes and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Ecological product design (life-cycle concept) ensures shelf-life of the product as long as possible and the subsequent re-use or recycling of their materials. For example, halving the amount of material used for manufacturing of the product and doubling the product’s durability and material reuse at the same time would increase the efficiency of natural resources by about ten-fold.

Energy development issues are particularly relevant in today’s world. Lithuania, like most other European countries, faces major challenges in three areas: energy independence, the competitiveness of the energy sector and the development of a sustainable energy sector. Such a situation was determined by both historical and political circumstances and limited internal energy resources.
KTU Institute of Environmental Engineering is one of the first institutions in Lithuania to start operations in the field of cleaner production, researching energy saving practices not only in industrial enterprises, but also in public sector.

The Institute’s researchers and scientists conduct research in the following areas:

• efficient energy use;
• renewable energy sources;
• sustainable energy development.

This research area includes integrated waste management, which helps to evaluate and utilise all potential waste management alternatives that reduce management costs and environmental impacts. An integrated waste management approach suggests that there are no individual waste management methods that can ensure the management of all waste materials in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Consequently, this concept encompasses the entire system, including proper collection and handling of waste, such as recycling, biological treatment of organic matter, thermal treatment or landfilling.

The waste definition is very important for the correct waste management scenario. If waste is defined as “the thing that the holder removes” means that the waste already exists and that the holder has them and that they have something to do with them. Such treatment of waste not only does not encourage waste prevention, but also does not promote repeated or other use of potential waste. In fact, waste is an object created by humans, which at any given time and place has no purpose or cannot be used for its intended purpose. Such a definition of waste illustrates its dynamic nature: the same objects can be identified as waste or not at different points in different places or at different times. Human participation is also seen here – things can be treated like waste temporarily, until perhaps even the same person in the future will find their way of using or recycling.

 

Research achievements and impact

The exceptional feature of the research carried out by the Institute of Environmental Engineering is interdisciplinarity, combining environmental engineering and management, focusing on preventive approach towards environmental issues related to industrial development. The Institute is not only involved in cutting-edge research, but is also training highly qualified specialists for sustainable industry.
